Why Do We Choose to Suffer?
A few of the reasons on why we choose to suffer, from what I took out the podcast featuring Professor Paul Bloom was due to contrast, pleasure of mastery and satisfactory. Whether you want to accomplish your life goal of hiking a huge mountain, staying in school or because the temperature of your bath is super hot it feels nice these are contributions to why we stay in that spot.
And honestly I get it, I feel like with complications comes success in some form. This even pertains to life in most occasions too. I took into account that the Professor found a study that there was a correlation of people who have busy lives feel as if their life also had meaning. The more you accomplish the more it seems like you've lived life. However others think the complete opposite and don't know why they experience pain and take no meaning out of why the had to face a hard life with suffering.
Some of us face hardships and become mastered in how to handle a situation and become stronger emotionally or mentally. I guess this is a matter of how important one sees strength and maturity as a factor in somebody else, or how much they value that in somebody else, you know, to share the same experiences.
On the other hand of the conversation I believe those that chose to suffer, physically like putting themselves through a hard session at the gym, moving boxes at a warehouse (say it's because it's their job), or because they're pulling an all-nighter is all because eventually there will be a source of achievement from gaining the tasks that they accomplished.
For me a few of the things I do in my life to purposely suffer is staying in college, doing the homework and working ay the same time. I feel like it drains me and my mental health but I committed to these sacrifices for the goal of knowing I will achieve in getting my degree with money saved up for a better life and for the future I know I can provide for myself to live better.
Hi Yeida!
ReplyDeleteThe concept of CHOOSING to suffer is an interesting one. Though I understand that inevitably we choose one method over another and that we always have the option to stop doing something, but I still feel like saying that we choose to suffer is a curious phrase, you know? I do choose to stay in college, I also choose to work in college like you and that's the suffering that I chose. But personally, I feel it is a much milder suffering compared to not chasing my dream. It is a struggle yes, but to categorize it as a suffering is something that I had never thought of before.
